Intention:

Having two back-to-back classes on guard passing was particularly helpful for me. As they say, when you teach, you learn twice.

I’ve started to find a lot of success between the combination of Gordon’s passing (below) and Kaynan’s passing.

Two parts really make this work:

  • Cross body pins: If you mess this up, you know it, because you get swept. In open guard scenarios, you’re almost always going to want to pin their far foot to their far butt-cheek. The cross-control would be the near-side armpit then.
  • Wrestling: Similar to the standing position, I need to try to maintain the inside space and lower head position. If I lose the later, I need to work a snap down (guillotine, armbar, back take, etc.). If I lose the former, I need to work the high step passing referenced above. Any time feet are exposed, we can attack those, or use them to put our opponent on their back — ankle picks work exactly the same if our partner is seated on their butt or if they’re standing with us.
