Overview:
- Quarterly Goal: Emphasize better rather than more or harder.
- Monthly Focus: Open Guard Passing
- Weekly Objective: Complete aerobic support program.
Intention:
Today’s class was a bit of transition where I had wrapped up previous material, and next week will start to follow ADCC prep.
With that in mind, I wanted to spend an odds-and-ends day going over the ADCC rules and manipulating some of the finer scoring points.
We are a sub-heavy gym, and I’m a sub-heavy person, but nevertheless tactics do matter, and points are a thing.
Warm Up:
Drill:
- 5 x 2 minutes: stance-in-motion / off-balance
- 5 x 2 minute: drill off-set collar stance to set up collar ties
- 5 x 2 minutes: drill down-blocks on front and rear sides
Work:
- 3 x 2 minutes (1 min top, 1 min bottom): from side control, score as many knee-on-belly points as possible.
- 3 x 2 minutes (1 min top, 1 min bottom): from side control, score as many back, mount, or knee-on-belly points as possible.
- 3 x 1 min (30 sec top, 30 sec bottom): standing vs. seated, keep opponent grounded.
- 3 x 2 min (1 min front, 1 min back): back escapes.
Reflection:
What worked well:
- We had some brand new people in class, but it seemed to makes sense to them (standing) to fight for inside shoulder / toe position similar to how you would in striking (except we’re looking for collar ties, not punches).
What didn’t:
- I got a few shark-tank back escape rounds in and while I did fine, it occurred to me that this is something I haven’t worked in a while and will be good to brush up on again.
Plan for next time:
- I was talking to Kyle about tactics and game planning and 8-weeks is too short to change a lot, but focusing on sharpening one or two things you already do well, and working on escapes prepares you pretty well for almost any ruleset – at least until more / other experience and evidence dictate otherwise.
