Overview:

  • Quarterly Goal: Emphasize better rather than more or harder.
  • Monthly Focus: Bad Position / Addressing Deficits
  • Weekly Objective: Back Attacks / Defense

Intention:

Today was open drilling. Some segments were spent helping teammates work on what they wanted to work on, but that’s part of the process.

I continued working on standing hand fighting and heavy collar ties, but also added transitions to inside / underhook positions. I also drilled a bit of back step leg attack entries after achieving a double-underhook side control positions (likely via tripod or bodylock pass).

Warm Up:

  • none

Work:

  • 2 x 5 minutes: live, hard hand-fighting / stand-up scrimmage
  • 4 x 5 minutes: drilling leg entanglements from side control
  • a few x 5 minutes: helping teammates drill their game plans

Reflection:

What worked well:

  • Simon and I had a good discussion about upper body takedowns, collar ties, etc.
  • I feel like I’ve got a solid strategy and the technicals of “where I want to be / what I want to execute” are solid, but will need some work to avoid prescriptive choreography.

What didn’t:

  • I have to remember to actually use the template and training plan I laid out for myself. I got a little sucked into excitement of new things and didn’t stick to the plan.
  • Technically this wasn’t a true rebound session, it did cost me a little recovery, but < 5% is an acceptable margin of error.

Plan for next time:

  • I want my class to go over back escapes / attacks this week if that’s something we’re going to be adding to every class, we should make sure there’s a technical foundation for it as well.
  • This will be good for me to touch up on as well, and similarly for armbars / guillotines next week; before focusing really heavy on wrestling and leglocks in the following weeks.
