Overview:

  • Quarterly Goal: Emphasize better rather than more or harder.
  • Monthly Focus: Bad Position / Addressing Deficits
  • Weekly Objective: Back Attacks / Defense

Intention:

In today’s class I wanted to focus on back attacks, since Kyle and I will be focusing on “bad positions” a lot through the coming weeks.

Warm Up:

  • 2 x 4 minutes (2 as attacker, 2 reacting): collar tie pummeling
  • 2 x 2 minutes: grip fighting for hip / chest control.

Work:

Drill progression:

  • RNC: kneeling behind seated
  • RNC: both seated (EBI overtime)
  • Straight Jacket: under hook side
  • Straight Jacket: under hook side, return to over hook side
  • Details: nose wipes, chin lifts, head fighting (towards floor, opposite side of strangle arm)

3 x 5 min: rotational round: score-or-escape from back (getting mounted is not a valid escape).

Reflection:

What worked well:

  • Most people picked up this material pretty well and intuitively discovered the escape process.
  • Escapes would have been too much to add for one class, so class material will just have to move slower than my personal focuses.

What didn’t:

  • We didn’t have time to address subtle issues like ending up in a rear triangle with larger opponents.

Plan for next time:

  • Next week’s class will focus on back escapes.
  • I need to figure out my sleep / meal timing. Something’s been off – eating too late, bathing too hot, or something making me kind of restless and having low quality sleep.
