Overview:
- Quarterly Goal: Emphasize better rather than more or harder.
- Monthly Focus: Bad Position / Addressing Deficits
- Weekly Objective: Back Attacks / Defense
Intention:
Today’s goal was to fine tune the volume and template for open mat days as well as get some competition style rounds in.
Warm Up:
2 x 5 minutes: flow / creativity rounds
Work:
- 3 x 5 minute competition rounds
- 3 x 5 minute back escapes (I was attacked the whole time)
- 2 x 5 minute drill clean up / troubleshoot
Reflection:
What worked well:
- My arm-drag-to-single-leg take down is probably my highest percentage.
- Combing wrestling and leglocks is a solid plan.
- I did a good job sticking to the plan and trying to get to my desired side-control-with-double-underhook position.
What didn’t:
- This didn’t particularly go bad, but there’s definitely a tradeoff of urgency trying to wear your opponent down. You can’t succumb to your won impatience on the one hand, yet you never know if a ref is going to prefer seeing mat / ring control vs. attempted offense. So, there’s a fine line where you need to cash out and start initiating.
Plan for next time:
Avoid tunnel vision. Opportunities to attack will, probably, present themselves. We need to be on the look out and ready to capitalize on them.
I got kind of a late start and people left early, but I think a reasonable open mat breakdown is:
2 x 5 minute rounds: flow / creativity
5 x 5 minute rounds: competition style (one-on-one-off)
- Discuss tactics between rounds.
3 x 5 minute rounds: bad position / escape.
