Overview:

  • Quarterly Goal: Emphasize better rather than more or harder.
  • Monthly Focus: Bad Position / Addressing Deficits
  • Weekly Objective: Upper Body Attacks

Intention:

Today’s focus was to “just drill”, no positional rolling, just discussing strategy and getting some reps in to polish the week’s focus – mainly guillotines and armbars.

Warm Up:

1 x 5 CARs each:

  • Shoulder
  • Hip
  • Spine
  • Elbow
  • Knee
  • Ankle
  • Wrist
  • Neck

Work:

60 minutes drilling:

  • Guillotines (from standing and front headlock)

    • plus anaconda transition
  • Armbars from side control

    • plus transition to saddle

Reflection:

What worked well:

  • I kept my heart rate low and in range (~120).
  • The flow and work with teammates was even and productive.
  • We got a little distracted discussing tactics and theory, but it supported the practice and wasn’t off topic.

What didn’t:

  • A lot material got covered, so I might need to dial the focus in throughout the week.

Plan for next time:

  • During open mat and class sparring rounds I’m going to try and look for the specific submissions I’m supposed to be focusing on this week.
  • If I had to pick, that would be guillotines. Technically armbars are higher percentage in ADCC, but I suspect a lot of transitions occur off of guillotine attempts. Guillotines also fit more congruently with my overall gameplan and strategy.
