Overview:

  • Quarterly Goal: Emphasize better rather than more or harder.
  • Monthly Focus: Bad Position / Addressing Deficits
  • Weekly Objective: Upper Body Attacks

Intention:

Today’s class focused on escaping the back and positional sparring.

Warm Up:

  • 2 x 3 minute: drill attack sequences from the back.
  • 5 x 1 minute: standing scrimmage (focus on disrupting the feet)

Work:

  • Drilling back escapes to “pillow” and “underhook” sides.

    • Emphasize grip fighting and head position.
    • Getting mounted is not a valid escape.
  • Positional Sparring:

    • 3 x 6 minute (3 minute front, 3 minute back): back escape / submit

      • First two rounds from OT position
      • Last round with arm trap, or body triangle (not both)
  • CARs

    • Shoulder, 1 x 5
    • Hip, 1 x 5

Reflection:

What worked well:

  • We spent the warm up attacking which primed us for positional sparring.
  • During the second two positional rounds I instructed people to “keep track of re/scoring” which some folks took advantage of well.

What didn’t:

  • We didn’t have time to cover body-triangle escapes, but I did show that just so people have an idea of the additional mechanics. The overall principles remain the same though; it’s just an overall much more difficult position.

Plan for next time:

  • This was the last day of “back stuff” before we start to get really competition focused. Next week’s class content will follow behind my personal training (armbars or guillotines).
  • As per yesterday’s notes I’m going to finish re-watching ADCC 2022 and draw some new strategy conclusions to explore at open mat this week.
