Overview:
- Quarterly Goal: Compete at ADCC Open Atlanta
- Monthly Focus: Wrestling to Leg Entanglements
- Weekly Objective: Leglock Breaking Mechanics
Intention:
Wednesdays have been hard competition focused rounds in the ADCC format: 3-minute submission-only, 3-minutes submissions with points, with a possible 3-minute overtime (no breaks between periods). Typically we’ve been working 2 rounds on, one round off, full round plus overtime, one round off.
Warm Up:
- 10 minutes creativity flow: any takedown to any pass to any armbar.
Work:
- 6 x 6 minute rounds (competition scoring)
- 1 x 9 minute round (competition scoring)
- 1 x 3 minutes bad position (defending the back the whole time)
Reflection:
- Round 1: Won - Head-and-Arm choke after takedown in points period. I also had a nice Kani Basami to an ankle lock at the buzzer.
- Round 2: Won - Guillotine. I also paid for a forced guillotine later in the round but managed to scramble and avoid getting scored on.
- Round 3: Won - Head-and-Arm choke after takedown in points period. I did a good job of racking up points before committing to the choke. I also got an RNC after getting a takedown, and having a look at their back when they used an Octopus Guard to try and sweep.
- Round 4: Won - Points. This was a much smaller partner, so rather than merc them I tried to focus on heavy collar ties and being very positionally secure.
- Round 5: Won - Heelhook. He was doing a good job of pummeling in chest-to-chest to try and avoid throws, but that created a good opportunity for me to pull guard and attack the legs.
- Round 6: Lost - Points. He secured a takedown before points and I was able to fend off the guard pass, but got mounted. I rallied back to get a look at a leg, which he was wise to and disengaged. Standing with seconds left, I because I knew I was down on points and chuffed on the wet mat like Charlie Brown.
- Round 7: Won - Kneebar. Partner pulled guard and got good elevation on a sweep, but heavy hip swivel gave left our legs entangled where I had the advantage.
- Round 8: Escaped 3x, Choked 1x
Key Takeaways:
Tactically almost flawless.
- There was one forced guillotine, but after it worked once.
- In the round I lost, I probably should have pulled guard in order to be on bottom with a much larger opponent that would have been very hard to wrestle down. The guard would have allowed me to be on bottom under my terms with me choosing the position rather than having to escape from mount and take what I could get.
Technically I got a little frustrated and rushed the kneebar. I was a bit tunnel visioned and I feel like a more savvy partner would have escaped and I wouldn’t have seen or transitioned as well to stronger (heelhook) finish.
Doing the bad position tired was great. I mean, it was terrible, but you have to be in a different mindset to keep fighting when you’re smoked and someone is still in a great position and actively strangling you.
