Overview:
- Quarterly Goal: Compete at ADCC Open Atlanta
- Monthly Focus: Wrestling to Leg Entanglements
- Weekly Objective: Leglock Breaking Mechanics
Intention:
I’m working through some of Gordon Ryan’s instructionals in preparation for ADCC, so that material is carrying over into the classes I’m teaching. I’ve done heel hook classes with folks from ages 7 - 54 and haven’t had a leglock related injury in them – that requires good teaching, but also knowing your milieu.
Heelhooks would not have been appropriate for some of the folks in tonight’s class, so we started with ankle locks which are an excellent foundation to familiarize yourself with the leg entanglements, and the submission is legal in virtually all adult divisions.
Warm Up:
- 6 x 1 minute: collar tie scrimmage
- 3 x 1 minute: collar tie scrimmage with emphasis on foot disruption / off-balance
Work:
- Leg pummeling drill: both partners seated, facing each other with one leg in and one leg out, scrimmaging for inside position.
- Drill: using thigh block to stop partner from pulling out and to pull yourself into irimi ashi garami.
- Drill: directional stress test for maintaining the position.
- Drill: ankle lock breaking mechanics.
- Sparring: 3 x 6 minutes (3 minutes attacking, 3 minutes defending) from irimi ashi garami, both partners seated, ankle wrap.
- Sparring: 1 x 6 minutes (3 minutes attacking, 3 minutes defending) from mount, top person has double underhooks.
Reflection:
What worked well:
- It looked like a lot of people were succeeding with their finishes. Of course, I started them in position, so another natural progression would be to test “getting to the position” and then combining everything together.
What didn’t:
- The technical parts took a bit long, so in the future I want to incorporate more sparring even though my classes do tend to be more technically focused.
Plan for next time:
- Keep techniques short and few to allow time for sparring (in addition to longer warm ups and bad positions)
- Ankle lock defense is also a natural transition into heelhook offense for next week.
